Astrophysics and Cosmology Groups

The General Relativity group connects astrophysics and mathematical physics, it also deals with a variety of research topics in classical and quantum gravitation. Some topics of extensive interest include dynamics of black holes, quantum field theory in curved spacetime, cosmology, mathematical foundations of general relativity, quantum gravitation, thermodynamics of blackholes, alternative theories of Gravity.

General Relativity forms the basis for the disciplines of Cosmology (the structure and origin of the Universe on the largest scales) and Relativistic Astrophysics (the study of galaxies, quasars, neutron stars, etc.)

The group is further subdivided in subgroups given below:

1.Cosmology

Cosmology is the study of the universe as a whole and its history from the beginning. Understanding of the universe has improved amazingly in recent years, it is possible because of parallel progress in theoretical, computational, and observational study.
The inflation of the universe is being caused by a mysterious “dark energy” and that much of the matter of the universe is also “dark”. Scientists are working hard on both theories and experiments which will solve the mystery that what particles make up the “dark matter”. After decades of hard work astronomers have recently succeeded at detecting gravitational waves from colliding black holes, opening a new window on the cosmos and a new era for research. Gravitational waves are one of the most fascinating advancements in the cosmos research.

2.Relativistic Astrophysics Group:

Black holes are possibly the most intriguing objects in the Universe. They deform the space-time around them and prevent everything, including light, from escaping. All the mass in a black hole is concentrated in a tiny region, surrounded by a boundary called the “event horizon”. Nothing that crosses that boundary can return to the outside universe, not even light. This group deals with research in the areas of gravitational physics, Theoretical General Relativity, several aspects of black hole physics, gravitational waves, The theoretical activities include the study of binary “compact objects” such as black holes, neutron stars and white dwarfs, accretion-powered binary stars. Research is also carried out in thermodynamics of blackholes.
